micro

Definition:

Microfiber is a very fine synthetic fiber — usually made from polyester, polyamide (nylon), or a blend of both — that is thinner than one denier (finer than a single strand of silk, which is about 1 denier).

  • Technically, microfiber = fibers that are <1 denier per filament (dpf).
  • Common types are 0.3D ~ 0.9D, sometimes even 0.1D (called “super-microfiber”).

Key Characteristics

  • Extremely soft & smooth → feels gentle on skin.
  • Lightweight but strong → fine diameter but high tensile strength.
  • High density & coverage → fabric looks fuller and more luxurious.
  • Excellent absorbency & wicking → due to large surface area of fine fibers.
  • Good cleaning power → fine fibers trap dust, dirt, and grease easily.

Applications of Microfiber

Home Textiles

  • Bedsheets / pillow covers / quilts → silky touch, high comfort.
  • Cleaning cloths / mops → can absorb water & oils, trap dust efficiently.
  • Upholstery & curtains → soft drape, durable.

Apparel

  • Sportswear → lightweight, moisture-wicking, breathable.
  • Lingerie / underwear → soft and smooth against skin.
  • Outerwear linings → provides soft, lightweight insulation.

Industrial

  • Filters → fine fibers catch tiny particles.
  • Medical textiles → masks, gowns, wipes.
